BRICS-Evolution and possible paths for the future

On 19 August 2023, AMEC organised a webinar on the Evolution of BRICS and Possible Paths for the Future. The session was conducted by Ms Raissa SarÃĐ, a policy coordinator Latam at CDP Latin America in Brazil and research fellow at AMEC.
One of the important points mentioned by Ms Raissa SarÃĐ is the evolving landscape of de-dollarization. Highlighting a significant agreement between Brazil and China in 2023, she emphasized the shift towards mutual trade investment using local currencies, bypassing the dependency on the US dollar. This move is part of several bilateral cooperation agreements with China, acknowledging the need for diverse options beyond the US currency due to Chinaâs pivotal role as a commercial partner. While immediate de-dollarization might not be imminent, these discussions signify a crucial step toward a future where alternative currencies play a more prominent role in global trade. Ms SarÃĐâs extensive background in international relations and her experience in various sectors make her insights valuable in understanding these complex economic shifts.
