ABOUT AMEC

Our History

The Asia Middle East Center for Research and Dialogue (AMEC), traces its origins to the profound historical interactions and shared experiences of Asia and the Middle East. Inspired by the long-standing socio-political and cultural exchanges between these regions, AMEC was founded as a platform to foster research, dialogue, and collaboration among nations in Asia and the Middle East.

In the modern era, the countries of Asia and the Middle East embarked on parallel journeys of new transformation. They navigated the challenges of the past sovereignty, and engaged in the vital tasks of nation building and economic development. These shared historical experiences provided the impetus for the establishment of AMEC, recognising the need for collaborative efforts to address common challenges and promote mutual understanding.

While some countries in both regions have made remarkable progress in areas such as education, governance, and economic growth, others continue to face challenges in their developmental pursuits. AMEC, in its mission, seeks to bridge these gaps by encouraging research initiatives and fostering dialogues that promote cooperation, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development across Asia and the Middle East.

In essence, AMEC’s history is intertwined with the historical narrative of cooperation in Asia and the Middle East. It stands as a testament to the shared vision of nations striving for excellence, understanding, and unity in the face of complex global challenges.

October 19, 2022, stands as a pivotal moment. It was on this auspicious day that the Asia Middle East Center for Research and Dialogue (AMEC) came into being, officially inaugurated during the International Conference on the Middle East and Malay World: Contemporary Issues and Future Challenges. This transformative event marked a watershed moment, as AMEC set the stage for a new chapter in its journey.

The opening ceremony was delivered by Minister Dato’ Sri Wan Junaidi (currently President of the Malaysian Senate), who supported AMEC’s crucial role in clarifying concepts between the Middle East, the Malay world, and Asian countries. His well-wishes reflected the shared aspirations of the attendees, a diverse group comprising diplomats, embassy representatives, researchers, academics, humanitarians, and students. Together, they formed a united front, demonstrating their wholehearted support for AMEC and its mission.

The launch of AMEC on this day marked the beginning of a transformative era, where collaboration, dialogue, and understanding would flourish, shaping the course of AMEC’s history in the years to come.
